@joekent16jan19 Joe, I have enormous respect for you and I’m all about all podcast discussion whenever. I agree that targeted strikes could be helpful, but my view and approach is a bit more nuanced. In my opinion we also need a much heavier-handed approach in our diplomacy with the Iraqi government. The Iraqi government allows these Iran-backed militias to operate with impunity and with zero accountability, even though they fall under the Iraqi Security Forces umbrella as part of the PMF. Weak responses from politicians in Baghdad (and from our own diplomats on the ground like Josh Harris) only perpetuates our issues in the Middle East. Not a binary choice, exactly as you said. Always happy to discuss this further.

It depends on what is considered “against Iran’s interests”. Rockets have been shot at us almost constantly since we showed back up to assist in the ISIS fight. We didn’t target them, we didn’t even collect against them. We never even returned fire after getting rocketed. I was engaged by the Iranian backed militias in Iraq far more than I was by ISIS.

We can address Iranian terror by targeted CT strikes, as Trump did against Sulmani. Iran responded to this by stopping their proxies from attacking us (under Trump) until the beginning of this war. Prior to us attacking Iran they weren’t holding the SOH hostage. By attacking Iran we gave the IRGC what they needed, support from the Iranian ppl. Using more military means will only make this situation worse.
