If you take micro @lisdata for 25 Western economies, convert income for all households into the same currency (PPP dollars), express that currency in real terms and thus treat the entire group as a single country, you get the following Growth Incidence Curve for the period 2018-2023.

@JustinSandefur Madagascar is the perfect example of elite capture: people are getting poorer but a small elite is getting ostensibly rich. So many young people would like to leave but it’s not an easy country to emigrate from.

@JustinSandefur I was there when the protests started. Although it was violent, Gen Z managed to contain it while keeping the protesters engaged. The movement is well organised and they could topple more gvt in the world.

When Madagascar's gen Z protesters were born, the country's GDP per capita was pretty similar to Uganda or Tanzania in PPP terms. Today it's a fraction of those (also quite poor) places.

Euh... Comment ça ?!

@JohnHolbein1 This is data from Swiss. I think it’s sloppy to generalise the finding to all Europe for a phenomenon that is very country specific. The Swiss extreme right campaigned on the mosque issue.

@JustinSandefur Does it hold if you control for African sub-regions ? It seems to be driven by Southern African countries.

Surprising (to me): In African countries that are poorer or more unequal, people are more likely to say the rich pay too many taxes.

@AW_Baker If the statement is “institutions cause growth among other things”, I feel it’s not really informative. Of course, they play a role. I want to know how important they are relative to other factors.

I personally don't know why people think that these outliers are so damning. Probably because ARJ (implicitly, unintentionally) gave the impression that they thought R2=1. Why not just say "institutions are one cause among many, other stuff going on, China is weird'.

The program also includes teacher subject specialization and a system of school quality certification. There is only one treatment arm, so authors can't disentangle what matters the most for success.

Impressive results of a gvt program in Morocco implementing 2 GEEAP "great buys" : structured pedagogy and targeted remediation. +0.9SD! That puts it in the top 1% in terms of program effectiveness. povertyactionlab.org/sites/default/…
