@tedgioia @BradFarberman I had literally the exact same train of thought when I revisited MJ last week! I wonder if a middle ground, with Ellington exploring a small group sized like that of his Rainbow Grill engagement, would have been the best route.

@BradFarberman I was listening to Money Jungle yesterday. It reminded me how Ellington could easily have gone off in a very exciting & different direction in the early 1960s—but didn't because he had a big band on the payroll, and that ensemble required almost all of his creative attention.

Which jazz rhythm section was taking the most chances in the early 1960s? Maybe John Coltrane or Thelonious Monk's quartet? Perhaps the Bill Evans trio or Miles Davis's quintet? But check out how Duke Ellington's trio tackled "Summertime" in 1961. youtube.com/watch?v=zIhuyb…
