Happy National #STEM/STEAM Day! Archaeologists used the power of hydraulics to move 1000+ waterlogged ship timbers from the #ALX waterfront to Ben Brenman Pond. Event visitors tried it too lifting 3D printed timbers using mini forklifts to see how they transmit force using fluids

1. Artist Elizabeth Luallen’s interpretation of Alexandria’s early waterfront shows some important details about the city’s original landscape. It depicts high bluffs rising above mudflats along the Potomac’s edge. #WaterfrontWednesday

2. Historical records & extensive archaeological evidence indicate that early Alexandrians cut these bluffs down in the late 18th C to make new land in a process locally called “banking out.” This work created about 10 new city blocks in the core of Old Town’s waterfront

Archaeologists working at the Robinson Landing Site (44AX235) found this pipkin in a wooden box privy (Feature 12) likely filled in the late 18th/early 19thc. Early Alexandrians used this coarse earthenware vessel to cook over an open fire. #WaterfrontWednesday

The weather may have impacted our in-person plans today, but we still have plenty of archaeology content to kick off Virginia Archaeology Month! Check out these 3D models of all four ships excavated along the waterfront. Can you spot any similarities or differences among them?
