Today is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. A time for reflection and repentance, of fasting and forgiveness, as we prepare for Easter. After the outrage towards the Big Iftar in Parliament yesterday, I doubt we’ll see the same opprobrium directed at our service today… 🤷🏻‍♂️

The hardest challenge I’ve faced as a church abuse survivor isn’t the trauma itself—it’s the fear that speaking up will cost me everything. I’ve already faced backlash. I was even warned I’d never get a job if I told the truth. @cathynewman @BishopNewcastle @CofESurvivors

I spoke in @UKHouseofLords to say we must reject the false choice between defence and development. They are not competing priorities. properly used, development funding helps prevents conflict, tackles instability, builds a safer more just world. Cutting aid in this way risks exacerbating the very crisis that leads in insecurity and conflict.

Today, while walking between a meeting & a school visit, a stranger silently stopped me, pointed aggressively at my dog collar, pulled out a dog biscuit from their pocket, threw it down and told me to go and get it. Disturbed. Unsettled. This is micro-aggression.

“On rare visits to parliament..Farage & Reform are voting against • the employment rights bill • scrapping zero-hours contracts • sick leave & maternity pay And they want to charge for using the NHS They are not the answer for working people in Britain” theguardian.com/politics/2025/…

With respect to Fr @alexdjfrost, my only concern is that the conversation to easily focusses on the inclusion and vocation of the working classes without a focus on class and economic justice. It's not sufficient for the Church to 'include' people suffering unjust circumstances
Madeleine Davies@MadsDavies

A standing ovation for @alexdjfrost bringing his motion about working-class vocations to General Synod. Don't think I've ever heard whistles from the floor before!

@romeo017 @bexchapman3boys @alexdjfrost Context. He means in relation to class. Also, Saul didn't change his name; Jews in Hellenised culture had both Hebrew and Greek names. Paul used the latter in his mission to the Gentiles, hence Acts 13:9 'Saul, also known as Paul', rather than 'Saul switched his name to Paul'

Very supportive of Alex’s views in this article, and of his PM’s motion to General Synod requiring the Church to develop a strategic approach to working-class vocations. We need those vocations to be expressed not only in parishes, but at all levels of leadership in the Church.

@fluff35 What would be your top recommended reading(s) on that front? I feel I need to do a deep dive beyond my current knowledge base.

@fluff35 Thank you. Point about complementarian theology is well taken. It's clear that multiple segments of conservative evangelical theology are associated with violence. Are you aware of research on violence, con evan theo & power/status? I keep coming back to these overlaps this week

A statement from the Right Reverend Dr Helen-Ann Hartley, @BishopNewcastle : “Following my call for the resignation of the Archbishop of Canterbury I need to share the contents of a letter I received from both the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Archbishop of York a matter of days before the publication of the Makin Report. “It is my considered view that the letter I received from both Archbishops sent to me in such close proximity to the publication of the Makin review (regardless of its intended publication date) signifies a wider and systemic dysfunction of how the hierarchy of The Church of England has dealt with matters of safeguarding and most particularly the impact of church-related abuse on victims and survivors. Moreover, the archbishops’ use of what I experienced as coercive language when I read their letter indicates a complete lack of awareness of how power dynamics operate in the life of the Church. “The decision to make this letter and its response public has not been taken lightly. Quite simply it is the right thing to do.” Read letter in full 👉 bit.ly/3UIf6fR
