@PeterMoskos Directly accountable to the community as policies chiefs are appointed positions, not elected? This could all very well lead to a different type of policing rather than abolition but that's the mindset I still hold from my abolition days

@PeterMoskos Beyond the needed context. I police officer could be the physical force that steps in during an armed DV situation (good) but then they can body slam a teenager for cursing them off and "resisting arrest" (not good). And is it a good thing to have that class of authority not be

it’s amazing how women are able to navigate crowded rooms without ever touching a palm to a man’s lower back

I’d so much rather live somewhere everyone is so left wing that I feel reactionary than somewhere everyone is so right wing that I feel like a leftist

@jeanpaulblartre @parasociality Art and I was really really good at art, so I chose that instead. If I wasn't good at art, I definitely would have gone the STEM route. It's a bit sad that you can only do one thing as I would still love to pursue my technically minded interests if I could

@jeanpaulblartre @parasociality So girls have more options to choose from from their skillsets than boys do so are less likely to choose STEM. Personally, I found this interesting as it was the case for me. I loved (and still do) math and science, especially more abstract sciences like physics, but I also loved

@Etanarachel Your mom was on jeopardy?!? Also, that feels like a flaw of the jeopardy competition although it hasn't stopped women from winning although maybe explains some of the gap

I also think people are vastly overestimating the physicality involved in many seemingly non-physical competitions. When my mom was on Jeopardy she knew every answer. But she was completely unable to reach the button in time to be on any kind of competitive level.

People are citing this as an example of women not being competitive with men in another non-physical competition. Treating it a bit like Karsten Braasch or an under-15 boys team beating the women's national team. I don't think this particular story illustrates that point at all.

@Etanarachel I mean, as far as I'm aware the reason is because of inequality that women's chess and poker try to address as women's participation isn't equal to men's, but in an equal world, I don't see any reason for segregation.

I mean I think the argument that trans girls should be allowed to compete in women's sports because they never went through male puberty also implicitly supports the idea of female inferiority in athletics?
Cassie Pritchard@hecubian_devil

As it turns out, the people who pushed “we must ban trans girls from girls sports because natal girls are so naturally inferior to natal boys that they can’t possibly compete fairly even if a trans girl has been on estrogen since age 11” have low views of women’s athletic prowess

@Etanarachel Depends on the sport. Gymnastics, figure skating, and anything that involves immense body control is sex segregated not because of male advantage but because of differences in morphology. Men would struggle if assessed in women's gymnastics for example

@Etanarachel And maybe that's why you don't see trans women in women's gymnastics? They'd struggle to make it to that elite level being such a minority anyway. So I guess my point just not frame all women's athletics as inherently inferior to men's because it's not.

@Etanarachel Mens and women's gymnastics are essentially different sports and women have an advantage in women's gymnastics as it's built with women's physical advantages in mind. I don't think any trans woman would have an advantage and may even be at a disadvantage.
