The stunning Wells Cathedral in Somerset, England. Consecrated in 1239, it was the first cathedral constructed in the new Gothic style and is known for its famous scissor arches in the cathedral’s interior.

Jane Austen (1775-1817) wrote and revised all of her major novels at this table at her home in the village of Chawton in Hampshire. Her home is now a lovely museum and a wonderful tribute to her legacy—well worth the visit!

The Red Lion Pub in lovely Lacock, Wiltshire. Fans of the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice will recognize this site as the filming location of the Meryton Ball where we are first introduced to Mr. Bingley, his sisters, and his friend Mr. Darcy. #PrideAndPrejudice #JaneAusten

Beautiful. Hollywood Star Jessie Buckley praises marriage and motherhood during her Oscar-winning speech, dedicating the award to every mom “I would like to dedicate this to the beautiful chaos of a mother’s heart.” Marriage isn’t a trap. Babies aren’t burdens. Motherhood is a gift.

Chartwell in Kent. The country home of Winston Churchill and his wife Clementine from 1922 to shortly before his death in 1965. “A nation that forgets its past has no future.”

The grave of Anselm (1033-1109) in Canterbury, England. Anselm is known for positing a “satisfaction theory” of the atonement, arguing in his treatise “Why God Became Man” that the death of Christ was necessary to satisfy divine honor and justice. His work was seen by later theologians as a precursor to the doctrine of penal substitutionary atonement. Anselm is also known for his development of the ontological argument for the existence of God in his book, Proslogion.

The grave of John Bunyan (1628-88) in Bunhill Fields, London. Bunyan is best known as the author of the masterwork, Pilgrim’s Progress. He wrote the book from a jail cell, where he was imprisoned for preaching the gospel without a license and holding unlawful religious gatherings. He would spend a total of about 12 years in prison. Bunyan’s grave is surrounded by the graves of other Puritan greats such as John Owen and Thomas Goodwin. The poet William Blake is buried just a few yards away along with Daniel Defoe, author of Robinson Crusoe.

The Metropolitan Tabernacle in the heart of South London. Opened in 1861, it accommodated the largest congregation of any single Protestant church in the world under the extraordinary ministry of C. H. Spurgeon (1834-92). As many as 6,000 gathered regularly every Sunday morning and evening to worship here. Though the building has been significantly altered over the years, the outer facade pictured here is original to the building as it was in Spurgeon’s Day. Amazing to think of all that God has done through this one church!

Westminster Abbey’s stunning north door. Constructed nearly 1,000 years ago and made of oak, it is recognized as the oldest door in Britain. Here at Westminster, England’s monarchs have been crowned for nearly a millennia, starting with William the Conqueror in 1066. In the 1640s, the Abbey was the central meeting place of the Westminster Assembly of Divines, which published the Westminster Confession of Faith in 1646.

@world_tourists_ This isn’t Arlington Row. And it’s Bibury, not Bilbury. I’m pretty sure this picture is the high street in Burford.

Thomas Watson is in the news lately. This is Emmanuel College, Cambridge where he studied. Founded in 1584, Emmanuel was a center of Puritan learning in the 16th and 17th centuries. It was referred to as “the nursery of the Puritans.” Some of the most notable graduates of Emmanuel, alongside Watson, were Thomas Brooks, Jeremiah Burroughs, John Cotton, Stephen Charnock, William Gurnall, John Preston, Thomas Hooker, Anthony Burgess, William Bridge, and John Rogers.

The first of two volumes on T. S. Eliot. One of the finest biographies I've read in a while. Can't wait to read Volume II!
