It's about God trying to protect the faithful from the spiritual death and eternal damnation that results from the wickness of sin and idolatry. Leading someone to a spiritual death results in the worst kind of death a person can experience. If the flesh be killed, but the spirit lives (through faith in Jesus Christ), one still has eternal life. But if you murder the spirit, you have taken away one's life in eternity and left them in an endless state of pain and suffering, which is the ultimate goal of Satan for all he can lead astray. You are concerned with the killing of the flesh (maybe rightfully so), but the real concern for mankind needs to be preventing the death of the spirit, for therein lies the real tragedy. Regardless of all the killing of the flesh that Israel did in the Old Testament, ultimately most of them ended up spiritually dead having been consumed by the cancer of idolatry. They did not believe and carry out the word of God, but instead took on the customs of the heathen around them, marrying their daughters and worshiping their gods. As such they were eventually cast off by God, both Israel and Judah, hence the need for Jesus Christ. God no longer commands the faithful to engage in physical battles with the wicked, such a directive is no longer relevant, and it's far too late anyway. But rather, it is our job to put on the full spiritual armor of God so we might fight the real battle, a spiritual battle for life and death against the wiles of the devil.
