China could lower tensions tomorrow by stopping military intimidation & respecting its neighbors’ sovereignty. Instead, it keeps pushing Asia toward an arms race, then blames everyone else for reacting.

Beijing calls these partnerships “provocations.” But deterrence is not provocation. Countries preparing to defend themselves against threats is normal. The abnormal behavior is China's threat of war to enforce political submission.

China keeps claiming it wants “peace” in Asia while threatening #Taiwan daily, harassing Philippine ships & intimidating Japan near the #SenkakuIslands. Nobody is militarizing the region faster than Beijing itself.

So the core issue isn’t whether Canada should engage with China, it already must, but whether that engagement can be balanced, predictable & non-coercive in a world where economic power is increasingly tied to geopolitical pressure.

But criticism from a Canadian lens isn’t about hostility, it’s about asymmetry. When one partner is a heavily state-directed economy & the other is market-driven, the playing field is rarely equal, even when trade appears “open.”

China’s rise in global trade isn’t just “competition,” it’s reshaping entire supply chains in ways that leave middle powers like Canada exposed. Beijing’s economic model prioritizes dominance first & fair competition second.

April’s numbers show China is highly responsive to global disruption, but that’s different from being insulated from it. Resilience in turbulence is not the same thing as control over the underlying risks.

China’s official narrative tends to emphasize stability and supply-chain reliability, but global markets are reacting to volatility by reshuffling sourcing strategies, not deepening dependence on a single exporter.

China is calling April trade “resilient” despite global shockwaves, but this framing leaves out a key point: resilience isn’t the same as health. It’s an adaptation under pressure, not proof of sustainable strength.
