Together with @alexdmoise & @ZTruchlewski we propose to look at the off-diagonal in preferences for EU polity building and specific policies. We then analyse a wealth of data on public attitudes in 4 policy domains and how they have evolved over the course of the war.

Excited to see our paper out in Political Behavior. We test the Tillian "war makes states" hypotheses for the EU in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, in a survey experimental design - we vary Russian threat and the US response Open Access: link.springer.com/article/10.100…

Populist autocrats benefit from apathy. That's how Orbán managed to dismantle Hungarian democracy. Extreme polarization in the US, for all its downsides, may actually save it during the long 4 years ahead. While the shock is not as big as in 2016, the resistance may yet be.

Top shows marginal effects under continued US support, EU army has less support than increasing cooperation at EU level, and increasing defense independently. Bottom shows "US withdrawal" scenario - EU army is preferred compared to national capacity only. Cooperation still on top

In a forthcoming article in Political Behavior, @NenaOana @ZTruchlewski and I experimentally show greater support for EU defense cooperation and even an EU army, if the US weakens commitments to Ukraine and Europe. Sad to see this has become a more realistic scenario @ERC_SOLID

New article out with Hanspeter Kriesi. We explain why policymaking was different in the Ukrainian refugee crisis compared to the 2015 one - and why, paradoxically, this didn't make a difference for how Germany and Hungary accepted refugees! Open access! doi.org/10.1080/135017…

Pundits and scholars still often question whether the economy plays a significant role in populism. In my latest piece @ConversationUS, I dive into our first-of-its-kind meta-analysis @BJPolS to argue that economic insecurity is a crucial driver of populism. While cultural anxieties play a role, the media's focus on populist voters' "bad manners" and cultural provocations overshadows the broader appeal of populist movements. For instance, The Democrats have been hemorrhaging support among working-class Americans, regardless of race, losing voters who are more attracted to Trump's populism than technocratic centrism. This is not merely a cultural problem; it's a political challenge arising from working-class economic anxieties. Successful populists expand their appeal by tapping into economic fears and thereby go beyond their racist/culturalist core base. To combat populism, we must transcend the dichotomy of culture versus economy and recognize their interplay. Addressing right-wing populism requires a concerted effort to alleviate the economic insecurity that underpins this global phenomenon. theconversation.com/populism-can-d… @DrMcNamara @davidstuckler @ManuSeral @alexdmoise @EuropeAtHarvard @GUQatar
