Our rate of premature death from cancer in the Philippines is devastating. Early detection raises cancer survival rates. And the NICCA has introduced safety nets & support for patients and their families through the Cancer Assistance Fund (CAF).

Health literacy about cancer prevention is also a problem, despite the modifiable risk factors like smoking and alcohol abuse that we can easily address. The lack of knowledge, too, on the signs & symptoms of cancer among the patients can cost a life.

Because of medical advances, we are in a better position now to screen for and detect cancer early. This leads to better treatment of this dreaded disease. Pero marami pa rin ang takot magpa-check up dahil sa pangambang walang pangtutustos o pambayad sa gamutan.

As primary author of National Integrated Cancer Control Act (NICCA), it gives me joy, every time I hear from patients who were helped by this law. It’s also encouraging to see it bolster health promotion efforts like tobacco control &multimedia campaigns for healthier lifestyles.

Per @DOHgovph statistics, cancer is the third leading cause of death in the Philippines, with lung cancer ranking number one in mortality. This is followed by liver, breast, colon & prostate cancer. A lot of these deaths could have been prevented by managing key risk factors.

February is Cancer Awareness Month 💜 This week, too, on V-Day, we will be commemorating the passage of the National Integrated Cancer Control Act (NICCA), a law that comprehensively tackles cancer control & care from a whole-of-government perspective. #cancerawareness
