Check in on your friends
I was apprehensive but Frank encouraged me to post this because it might do some good somewhere.
Hopefully, someone reads this, picks up the phone, and checks in on a friend.
Where I grew up, there was an epidemic of opioid abuse. I remember being offered a line of oxycontin at a high school party. There were about 3 seconds of consideration, I said no, and it definitely saved my life.
I think a lot of lives get destroyed in those 3-second moments in teenage years.
In my town, lots of teenagers got started on opioids, eventually couldn’t get access or afford enough of them, and then moved on to heroin.
18 years after being offered that line, I am now 35 and well over a dozen of my former classmates are dead from drug overdoses, including many close friends who simply did that first line without a clue of the ramifications.
Today, Frank and I were supposed to go to the Devils game but when I showed up at Belleville HQ he took one look at me, made a couple of calls, and gave away his seats.
Instead, he drove an hour each way with me down to a hospital in southern New Jersey to see my friend.
One of my closest friends since childhood, Mike, was suddenly in intensive care at a hospital.
We lost his older brother about 12 years ago and have kept Mike close since, especially my best friend Ryan.
Ryan has been my brother since preschool. He’s the guy who calls everyone to check in. If he hasn’t heard from you, knows you’re going through a tough patch, senses distress or abnormal behavior, or for no reason at all - he calls.
He doesn’t try to fix everything, he just reminds us all we are loved unconditionally. He reminds us how tough we are and that we’ll be ok. He gets us all together. He is everyone’s glue. He is married with 3 daughters, works hard, and still makes the time.
Be more like Ryan.
We met Ryan and his wife at the hospital. We had about an hour with Mike to say goodbye. He was unresponsive but getting to hug him and tell him we love him was important and it’s what he’d have wanted.
He passed away a couple of hours later and was honored by the hospital staff as an organ donor. Apparently one of his organs is going to save someone else’s life.
It was a tragic day but Ryan, his wife, our other friend Brandon from back home, and Frank made a mutually supportive team at the hospital.
We did walk 150 at a park nearby after the hospital. My friend Brandon joined us and we told Frank endless stories about our childhood with Mike. Brandon is also a huge Rangers / NHL fan so he and Frank had some good puck talk to lighten the day.
After our walk, we did a raw dog and ate dinner together. Frank put on a show. It was a good distraction. I drove us back to the Harrison train station to commute home and I thanked Frank for everything he did today. He really was the 🐐 and kept me laughing.
Please check in on your friends. The quietest are often suffering the most.
For anyone battling addiction, depression, or anything else. You aren’t alone. There are people who love you. Your life is always worth taking back no matter how bad shit has gotten.
Tomorrow, I’ll stop by Frank’s in the morning for walk 151 and then he is going to take Justin Dolan to the game. I’m going to try to unplug tomorrow afternoon so please forgive me if there is no blog. I’ll be back stronger than ever Monday.
Please, check in on your friends.
Anudder day I’m grateful for my friends.
