@baritone @StartsWithUs The suggestion in the paper is to take seriously that their behavior is due to the belief that Dems are undermining democracy. Showing that lowering that fear leads to, for instance, more voting for democratic candidates in hypothetical primaries. Working on a field version now.

@AliaBraley @StartsWithUs Fair enough. But my question to you would still have to be, does it really matter if they are theoretically "more committed to democracy" if they keep voting as a herd to elect more fascists who are bent on destroying that democracy? What matters is their actual voting behavior.

"You can increase people’s willingness to adhere to democratic norms by lowering their fear of the other side." - @AliaBraley So much of our extreme division comes down to faulty perceptions we have of each other. Learn more about this research: news.berkeley.edu/2023/05/22/ber…

@baritone @StartsWithUs I suggest reading the full paper for our theory about how Republican leadership is following the autocratic playbook. What we find is that Republican citizens are typically more committed to democracy than the people they are voting for and we provide new evidence as to why.

@ProfCRobertson Thanks for this point - big changes in the SC since we started this study. I believe there is a place for civil disobedience. And an independent judiciary is widely seen as important for democracy. The results stand without this q and we are likely removing it in the next study.

Impt study by @AliaBraley uses "ignoring controversial court rulings" as an instance of the larger phenomenon of "democratic backsliding." But the SupCt is anti-democratic by design, and recent appointments & rulings especially so. Don't follow blindly. washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/…
