“Stroke is universally stressful so the high levels of anxiety and depression experienced by survivors are not surprising and almost normal. “Stroke increases suicidal ideation and risk of death by suicide, especially in survivors under 60.” Prof Niall Broomfield at #UKSF24.👆

A wonderfully inspiring and thought provoking talk by @amyismall on medical bias and women’s health challenges in stroke. Observed a room full of curious women…and only a handful of men. How do we engage the support of our male colleagues? #uksf24

“Women need to be just as aware about symptoms and signs of stroke as they are about cancer.” Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the fourth largest cause of death in women (Scotland) but very few medical studies and trials are based on women. Dr Antonella Santuccione at #UKSF24👆

Women are being dismissed when presenting with risk factors for stroke. We are “just stressed” rather than acknowledging we are not small versions of men. We have other factors to consider; menopause, HRT, hormonal contraception. #uksf24 Dr Santuccione

Emily White on life after stroke at 22 raising concerns around medical biases and the importance of hearing our patients. The inequalities experienced by young stroke survivors and women alike show how far we have to go for women’s health in stroke #uksf24

Dr Amy Small talking on women’s health in stroke. Women present differently, delay symptom presentation, experience longer delays to imaging/doctor r/v. Limited data being collected is sex divided. How can we be more inclusive? @SSNAPaudit @UKStrokeForum

It takes an MDT to manage women in pregnancy after stroke…but you manage stroke in pregnancy the same as outside of pregnancy. #uksf
