Excited to share this work! Our paper highlights the pitfalls of EEN studies to date, and how we should design future studies to strengthen the evidence base and address unanswered questions

@NTforIBD This is a good question, how in vitro studies translate into human health is tricky and like you say, food is not one dimensional and I suspect additives are just one piece of the puzzle of our changing food source and impact on gut health and disease

🔍New research on 8️⃣ food additives tested individually or in combination using an in vitro human gut microbiota model shows unexpected results: ✅ No effect on the production of short-chain fatty acids ✅ None of the food additives caused gut dysbiosis, individually or in combination 💡It could be that different gut microbiotas may have various levels of sensitivity to food-additive-induced alterations We eat foods, not only nutrients, so it's important to explore the impact of food additives in the context of a whole diet 👀 A question still remains: Diets ⬆ in ultraprocessed foods are often also ⬆ in fat, sugar, and ⬇ in fibre It may be that the ultraprocessing itself, rather than the diet composition, is associated with health consequences What are your thoughts on this? @ProfWhelan @AaronBancil @BenoitChassaing @Alice_APD @EmmaHalmos
