It’s easy to roll eyes at Putin’s phony pretexts, but when you tell your soldiers they’re on a mission to save Russian speakers and brotherly Ukrainians and then pivot to orders to massacre them morale is going to be an issue

One would indeed expect that surprising your soldiers with the news that their "training exercise" is actually an invasion of their neighbor for which they are ill-prepared would have some detrimental impact on morale
