"The runners’ reasons for running helped us to interpret changes in their experiences through time. Meaningful reasons helped runners to learn that they can run, prioritise running, and prevent life getting in the way."

When we start exercising, the biggest challenge is staying on track. So what can we learn from those who do - and don’t - keep going? Interviews of 20 new runners - 10 who stopped and 10 who continued for 6-12 months - revealed: - Having a meaningful “why” helped participants learn they could run and prevent life getting in the way - Life was more likely to get in the way for those who had fewer opportunities to run or difficult experiences of running Strategies to help new runners should therefore: 1. Help people identify their “why”' 2. Consider the unique barriers faced 3. Build confidence and independence 4. Support prioritisation of exercise by planning for life obstacles and by finding pleasure in exercise. #abs0010" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Really happy to share this paper about what helps new runners maintain their running. Interesting findings (although I might be biased 😁) that formed the basis of my PhD. doi.org/10.1016/j.psyc…
