The Lagos State Government has officially announced the resumption of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, as disclosed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab. In a statement shared on March 14, 2026, Commissioner Wahab confirmed that the exercise will recommence effective Saturday, April 25, 2026. It will thereafter occur on the last Saturday of every month from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. During these designated hours, residents across Lagos are expected to actively participate by cleaning their immediate surroundings, clearing drainage channels in front of their properties, and ensuring proper waste disposal. Wahab emphasized that this is a shared civic responsibility essential for fostering a cleaner, healthier, and more flood-resilient city. The commissioner highlighted that the initiative will receive full enforcement support from the Lagos State Government to guarantee compliance and effectiveness. He described it as a key component of the state's broader commitment to environmental sustainability under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's administration. The monthly sanitation program, which involves temporary movement restrictions during the exercise hours to facilitate cleanup activities, was originally suspended in November 2016 due to enforcement challenges in the densely populated megacity and a related legal ruling. Earlier in 2026, there had been public speculation and conflicting reports about an immediate resumption, including denials from the government in February that any official start date had been set. Those clarifications noted ongoing stakeholder consultations and logistical preparations, including sensitization efforts. Wahab had previously urged residents to adopt voluntary cleanliness habits without waiting for formal restrictions. The announcement comes amid persistent concerns over waste management, indiscriminate dumping, clogged drains, and flooding risks in Lagos. Authorities view the reinstated exercise as a tool to restore environmental discipline, promote community participation, and address these challenges proactively. Residents are encouraged to prepare accordingly and view the program as an opportunity for collective action toward a #CleanerLagos and #GreaterLagos. Further details on enforcement guidelines and any exemptions are expected to be released closer to the April 25 commencement date.

Iran's government has officially ruled out participation in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing ongoing military conflict with the United States as the primary reason. Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali announced the decision in a statement broadcast on state television today. "Considering that this corrupt regime has assassinated our leader, under no circumstances can we participate in the World Cup," Donyamali said, referring to the recent U.S.-Israeli airstrikes that resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He added that "our children are not safe" and that no conditions exist for safe participation in the tournament co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The announcement comes less than 100 days before the World Cup kicks off on June 11. Iran had qualified for the expanded 48-team event and was drawn into Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand, with all group matches scheduled in U.S. venues including Los Angeles and Seattle. FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently stated that U.S. President Donald Trump had assured him Iran would be "welcome" at the tournament despite the tensions. However, the Iranian minister's firm rejection appears to close the door on any last-minute reversal. Iran's withdrawal could trigger significant consequences under FIFA regulations, including hefty financial fines—potentially up to €550,000 ($590,000) for a late exit—and possible additional sporting sanctions, such as exclusion from future competitions. FIFA has not yet commented on next steps, but the organization may replace Iran with another Asian team or adjust the group format. The decision highlights how geopolitical events have spilled over into global sports, raising questions about the tournament's stability amid the escalating Middle East conflict.
