I have this mini shipping container on my desk
I love containers and you should too, because they make our modern lives possible
Most shipping containers have standardized dimensions, making them easy to load, unload, and transport around the world
Before containers, freight had to be loaded manually, which required much more time/effort handling cargo
This changed when Malcolm McLean invented the modern shipping container in 1956
That year he'd convert The SS Ideal X (a WWII oil tanker) into the first containership and embark on a voyage from Newark, NJ to Houston, TX loaded with 58 containers
Shipping and global trade would never be the same
Ports around the world could now use standard equipment which ultimately reduced friction and made trade quicker, safer, and more efficient
Fast forward to present day
There are tens of millions of containers, estimates range from 17 to 65 million (based on my research)
And if you look at any modern good, chances are it was manufactured overseas, and thus likely shipped in a container
The ships transporting containers have gotten pretty big too. They can each carry tens of thousands of containers
MSC Irna is currently the largest containership with a capacity of 24,346 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit)
There are lots of these big ships and the scale of modern trade is hard to fathom.
It's a global network of shipping companies, ports, shipyards, ship-breaking yards, and more that enable goods to flow from basically any corner of the world to the other
So next time you order something on Amazon, think of the shipping container it was likely transported in
Pretty cool
