Statement on Zimbabwe’s Election Held on the 23rd of August 2023

6/6 We urgently call for the release of Tanele Maseko and her two sons and demand an end to the harassment and intimidation they are facing.

2/6 Tanele Maseko, accompanied by her two sons and a helper, was traveling to Eswatini when the police indicated that she is a person of interest. Her passport has been flagged as that of a wanted person in connection with her husband's murder. #JusticeForTaneleMaseko

6/6 We are deeply saddened by the behavior of the Eswatini state security forces, allegedly involved in the killing of her husband in front of her children, and over a year have failed to bring those responsible into Thulani Maseko's murder.

5/6 Such actions flagrantly violate their rights and perpetuate a pattern of harassment against human rights defenders in Eswatini. This continued intimidation creates an environment of fear and uncertainty for those who bravely advocate for justice and human rights.

4/6 We strongly condemn the behavior of the state for subjecting Tanele and her two sons to detention, harassment, and intimidation, and for further summoning them to the Manzini Police Headquarters today for additional interrogation.

3/6 Tanele Maseko has been leading the call for justice for Thulani Maseko, keeping his legacy alive and demanding accountability from the state for her husband's murder.

1/6 As the Southern African Youth Solidarity Network (SAYSN), we strongly condemn the detention of Tanele Maseko, a member of the World Liberty Congress and wife to the late Human Rights Lawyer, Thulani Maseko, who was brutally murdered in front of his family a year ago.
