Julia, I just want you for a moment to explore the possibility that HMRC may have access to information and facts that you don’t. They may have expertise in complex tax law, decades of experience and a commitment to impartial decision-making, often making decisions that Govts don’t like. So maybe, just maybe, this is the right decision but for some, politically inconvenient?

@JuliaHB1 @DanNeidle I mean who hasn’t refused to take expert tax advice, pay the bare minimum and see how it goes. Then just pay the excess when things go wrong, easy mistake 🙄

@zaconly She was never charged with tax evasion. But she did underpay her tax. She argued HMRC were wrong. After many months it’s been agreed that Anglea Rayner was wrong. And she’s had to cough up the £40k she underpaid.

Remember the sequence.
The Telegraph reveals Rayner removed herself from the deeds of the family house, designates a luxury seaside flat as her “main residence” and saves £40,000 in stamp duty while sitting in Cabinet demanding higher taxes on everyone else.
Only once she’s caught does she “self‑refer” to HMRC and the ethics adviser, having already banked the benefit of the dodge.
Now, months later, we’re told a quiet settlement of the missing tax, no fine and a conveniently timed green light just happens to arrive on the morning a leadership challenge is expected – and we’re meant to shout “vindicated” not “very cosy indeed”.
