When @arusbridger asked me to set up a new science section at the guardian Tim Radford (the science editor) could have cut up rough about it. Instead he was grace itself and an absolute beacon of collegiality for the new recruits @iansample @alokjha and co.

Read my cover story in this week's edition of The Economist. The Everything Drugs. How GLP-1 drugs are being investigated for treating a huge array of conditions and could turn out to be the most important class of drugs ever discovered. economist.com/briefing/2024/…

This year’s chemistry laureates Demis Hassabis and John Jumper have developed an AI model, AlphaFold2, to solve a 50-year-old problem: predicting proteins’ complex structures. Check out two examples of protein structures determined using AlphaFold2. First up, a bacterial enzyme that causes antibiotic resistance. The structure is important for discovering ways of preventing antibiotic resistance. Animation: ©Terezia Kovalova/The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences #NobelPrize

Some of the best random advice I've ever received is to follow the flight crews at airports for the quickest paths. What's an equivalent piece of advice from other settings?

A few thoughts on today, in no particular order. First, among Israelis: impossible to overstate the level of shock. The intelligence failure resembles 1973, but you almost have to go back to 1948 to find an analogue for the violence that played out in cities and towns. 🧵

The breadth of impact of LLMs is incredible when you start to dig into all the use cases This great study shows academics see it helping help non-English-speaking researchers to refine their papers' grammar and style Source: @Nature
