AI news this week (Mar 12 – Mar 18): 1) Meta delayed its flagship “Avocado” model after underperformance and is considering using Google’s Gemini instead. 2) Anthropic is fighting a US government “supply chain risk” designation that could block enterprise and defense adoption. 3) OpenAI introduced new GPT-5.4 mini + nano models optimized for high-volume, low-latency production workloads. 4) OpenAI launched Codex Security, an agent focused on identifying and fixing vulnerabilities in production codebases. 5) a16z released its latest Top 100 GenAI apps, showing how fast AI adoption and distribution layers are expanding. 6) New research shows top AI models still perform significantly worse outside English, highlighting fragmentation across use cases. Takeaway: Models are competing, fragmenting, and specializing fast. No single provider or model can cover every use case anymore.
