I’ve decided to purchase a small island in the Philippines. Over the past few months, I’ve been quietly exploring the idea of creating a physical hub for builders, a place where entrepreneurs, VCs, and creatives can live and work together.

OpenAI shutting down Sora is the most predictable outcome of misunderstanding consumer behavior. Everyone grossly overestimates how creative people want to be. 99% of humans simply want to scroll and zone out instead of spending energy conceptualizing, editing, and creating videos. No matter how much the barrier to creation is lowered by a single prompt. It still takes effort and a fair amount of creative thinking. Even Instagram has 2 billion users. But hardly ~10 million (or 0.5%) would be serious creators. So any AI consumer app betting on "with [new_app], everyone becomes a creator!" is being delusional and will go down the same way. After all the word "consumer" exists for a reason. They consume. They don't produce (or even want to lol)

The first ever video I posted on genFEED was made with Sora. It’s so good! So yea, will be missed. For creators looking for new tools, would love to chat and learn what’s your favourite alternative. Let’s keep creating for the generative generation.

VCs often ask: why wouldn’t Google or OpenAI do this? Well: Google+, Apple printers, and now Sora show why. Huge resources does not give licence to do lots of things. In fact, the risk is to lose discipline and focus. It’s not that they can’t, it’s that they shouldn’t.

Whilst I loved using Sora to make AI videos, it’s not shocking that it closed: It’s difficult - if not near impossible - to do content distribution properly if you only allow users to only use one production tool. It’s like forcing photographers on IG to use only Sony cameras.

@AlvinCarpio Thanks for accepting the idea! Quick suggestion to improve Genfeed onboarding: add a 3-step “Publish your first AI video in seconds” flow (“Upload video → Auto-fill metadata → Publish”) so new users get to publish a video in <1 minute. I can mock a quick in-app flow for you.
