I’m not Bengali. I grew up in Assam. Still, Saraswati Puja shaped my childhood. I quietly slipped my hardest textbooks at Maa’s feet not for show, but out of fear, faith, and hope. The marigold flower had to stay inside my books all year long. I touched my gurus’ feet because learning was never casual in our homes. I sang classical music from the tender age of three, because that’s how we were taught to thank knowledge back home. The smell of khichidi, tomato tok, begun bhaja, labra bhaji, payokh these weren’t “regional markers.” They were the essence of Saraswati Puja. We waited for it every year from my art class to my music school to our society puja pandal moving from one to another with the same quiet reverence. So when someone says only Bengalis pray to the Goddess of Learning, it tells me one thing: they’ve confused culture with ownership. Saraswati Maa isn’t a linguistic identity or a political badge. She lives wherever a child is afraid of failing and still opens a book. Where devotion to learning is lived, not announced. If that’s “Bengali only,” then India never existed.
