While we are calling out stereotyping, this needs to be said. Funke Akindele’s Aiyetoro Town and the Jenifa series have, over time, reinforced the image of Yorubas as razz, uneducated, and unable to speak proper English. The impact is real, and it will take time to undo. At least Jenifa was just one character. Aiyetoro presents an entire town as uncouth. Look at how the world embraced Wakanda and even thought it was real. That is the same way some people now view Yoruba communities because of portrayals like Aiyetoro. Some people got Wakanda. We got Aiyetoro.

@AkanbiBodunde @Ama_Stallion The same people will tell you the Saros are more Yoruba than the rest of us, depending on what they stand to gain from the division. Ọ̀rọ̀ wọn ti su mi. Àwọn alágànà.

Funke Akindele too contributes a lot to the stereotypes YORUBA women face. In this movie, she portrayed a brash and uncultured YORUBA woman while Omoni Oboli acted the suave, urban and educated Ibo woman.

This is not what Joke Silver left for us. This is not what Ireti Doyle left for us. This is not what Bimbo Akintola left for us. This is not what Shaffy Bello left for us. This is honestly tiring, and Funke Akindele should do better. She can’t keep profiting off the mischaracterization of Yoruba people.
