Dave Umahi and the 5 Missing NELAN Engineers.
The firm assigned five of its best engineers to the project. They were:
• Engr. Nelson Onyemeh — Lead Consultant/CEO of NELAN Consultants, from Ihiala, Anambra State.
• Engr. Ernest Edeani — From Nkanu, Enugu State.
• Engr. Ikechukwu Ejiofor — From Umunya, Anambra State.
• Engr. Samuel Aneke — From Nkanu, Enugu State.
• Engr. Stanley Nwazulum — From Amawbia, Anambra State.
During the course of the project, serious tensions reportedly arose between NELAN and the Umahi administration over project control and payments. According to the families of the five engineers, the Umahi government allegedly wanted NELAN to "take a back seat" so the state could exercise direct control, issue payment certificates, and give instructions to contractors.
The then-Governor Dave Umahi reportedly wanted NELAN to sign or approve certificates of satisfactory completion for work supervised or executed by other engineers and contractors. NELAN allegedly refused, arguing that doing so would violate the AfDB contract terms, breach its professional obligations, and risk the firm, and possibly the project—being blacklisted by the AfDB.
On November 3, 2021, the five engineers left Enugu for Ebonyi State in an official Toyota Hilux (registration number ERR 001 EB) for site supervision. They never returned, and, to this day, neither they nor their remains have been found.
What happened to the five NELAN engineers?

"We have to forgive ourselves and work together as one big family. The South-East has been our ally and friend over the years. During the time of our fathers in politics, the Northern People's Congress (NPC) formed an alliance with the National Council of Nigerian Citizens (NCNC), led by Nnamdi Azikiwe."

When I started making money and moved abroad, I made a list of many of my old friends and acquaintances. I began reaching out to them one by one, and in some cases, I even asked other people to help me find them.
When we reconnected, I asked how life had been and what they had been doing. Almost all of them were genuinely grateful that I hadn’t forgotten them, even though I was in my own season while they were still waiting for theirs.
After those conversations, I asked each of them one simple question:
“Tell me one thing I can do for you right now that would give your life a meaningful lift.”
The answers were often surprisingly modest. Since I was financially comfortable at the time, I usually gave them far more than they asked for.
One friend asked for ₦1 million to start a small business. I told him, “Let’s think bigger,” and gave him ₦5 million instead.
Another asked for an okada (motorcycle) so he could earn a living. I asked if he could drive a car. When he said yes, I bought him a car worth about ₦12 million so he could drive for Uber instead.
I did similar things for several others.
Over the years, many of them assumed that because I had reached out first and helped them once, they could always come back and ask for more.
What they never knew was that I wasn’t trying to become their lifelong provider.
I did what I did to clear my conscience. I wanted to know that if God blessed me financially, I hadn’t forgotten the people I once struggled alongside.
I have learned something important:
Helping someone in a meaningful way is a beautiful thing. Becoming responsible for another adult’s life forever is not.
Kindness has no regrets, but it must also have boundaries.
Sometimes the greatest gift you can give is a genuine opportunity. What they do with that opportunity is no longer your responsibility.

There MUST be a coroner's inquest into the death of Mary Habila at the residence of Tinubu's Minister of Works, David Umahi
Given the mysterious manner of her death and unanswered questions about the circumstances of her presence at the Minister's home, it is in the interest of justice that all appropriate investigative and forensic procedures, including, where required by law, an autopsy and any other relevant inquiries, be completed before Mary Habila is buried.
Any attempt at hurried burial by her family must be resisted. Ms. Mary Habila died with blood flowing from her mouth, which suggests that her death is unnatural.
There have been several allegations of mysterious deaths surrounding Umahi, including those of 5 NELAN Engineers that remain unsolved to date.
