Having lived in both Chennai and Bangalore, here is my take on these cities today. Chennai's fall started when it lost its waterways to sewage. The city's beautiful beaches got lost out to illegal kuppams like Ayothikkupam, creating a law and order situation near the beach. In 90s. Bangalore was a cosmopolitan city, filled with lots of trees, weather was pleasant. Very elite for an Indian city. One can get from one end of the city to the other end in 25 mins. Had pubs around the brigade road, residency road area. Today it is crowded, become a concrete jungle, weather a few degrees more due to the cutting of trees in the name of development. Unless one has the compulsion to live bcos of work, where Bangalore scores over Chennai handsdown, it is pointless to move into either one of these cities. Rather choose a small city like Mysore for improved QOL.

Fun fact: the cultural distance between North and South India is actually greater than that between North India and Pakistan.

Have said this many times before. The liquor policy in Tamil Nadu needs a complete overhaul. It should be something say similar to what is being followed in Karnataka. Chennai need to be like Bengaluru in terms of having good pubs and so on. It is not only the availability of drinks, but good ambience, comfortable places and so on. Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune are leading in attracting GCCs (Global Capability Centres). Chennai need to provide a better social life to attract talent.

Since the topic of “Oh, I hate Chennai” has come up again, I’m reposting this. This city, in fact, has a unique identity that is globally recognized - its arts and heritage. The complaints about the “lack of nightlife” are often comparisons with cities like Bangalore or Gurgaon. But Chennai definitely has its own. Not sure how many people actually hang out in Anna Nagar. It’s mostly the IT crowd that seems to have a problem here. Chennai is predominantly a manufacturing hub, and people in core industries generally don’t seem to have these issues. The only thing the city truly needs is upgraded infrastructure across both the core city and the outskirts. But every city is struggling & in shambles. And to those complaining that Chennai is “laid back” ... well, that’s actually a blessing!

Let me give all trying to learn Kannada, a life hack. When in doubt, find the equivalent pure Hindi word, and Kannadise it. Example: Instead of, "try maadi". Look for the closest Hindi word. Try = Prayatna. Then say, "Prayatnisi". Hey presto. You will be lauded for the purity of your Kannada. Has happened to me :-) Instead of saying "Naanu Responsibility Thagolthini" ( I take responsibility). Hindi word. Uttardaitva. Naanu Uttaradaitva thagolthini. Try it. Never fails!:-)
