Israel’s demolition of UNRWA’s buildings in illegally occupied East Jerusalem yesterday, boastfully overseen by the National Security Minister, is yet another example of the Israeli authorities’ full-fledged assault on international law, the UN & humanitarian work.
At a time when Israel continues to flagrantly violates its obligations towards Palestine refugees, UNRWA has long served as a lifeline, offering indispensable humanitarian aid, education, employment and shelter.
States must end their acquiescence by unconditionally supporting UNRWA and pressuring Israel to comply with the International Court of Justice’s October 2025 advisory opinion.
Israel must facilitate humanitarian aid, immediately revoke its anti-UNRWA legislations, and lift its cruel & arbitrary restrictions on humanitarian organizations.

Early on Tuesday 20 January, Israeli forces stormed a United Nations site: the UNRWA Headquarters in occupied #EastJerusalem. “What happens today to UNRWA will happen tomorrow to any other international organisation or diplomatic mission, whether in the Occupied Palestinian Territory or anywhere around the world. International law has come under increasing attack for too long and is risking irrelevancy in the absence of response by Member States,” says UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini @UNLazzarini

As the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla - the largest initiative of its kind - is expected to enter a high-risk zone in the Mediterranean where Israeli forces may attempt to intercept it as they did before.
The flotilla, carrying urgently needed food, medicine, and humanitarian supplies, set sail after nearly two years of Israel’s relentless attacks on Gaza and 18 years of an illegal blockade that has left Palestinians in Gaza deliberately starved and deprived of essentials, as part of Israel's ongoing unlawful occupation of the Palestinian territory.
The persistent inaction of states in the face of Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip has forced activists from across the world to take peaceful measures to break the siege.
States have a responsibility to guarantee the flotilla’s safe passage. They must step up pressure to protect the flotilla and demand an end of Israel's genocide, and of its unlawful blockade once and for all.

We are extremely alarmed by the latest information we have received regarding the whereabouts of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiyyah, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital. He should now be considered as victim of enforced disappeared, and as such at great risk of torture and ill-treatment. Israel authorities must urgently disclose the location of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiyyah.
Dr. Abu Safiyyah was reportedly arrested on December 27, 2024, when IDF forces raided Kamal Adwan Hospital. Video footage from that day shows the senior doctor walking toward an IDF armored vehicle before being taken for questioning. Following the incident, an IDF spokesperson confirmed his arrest and stated that he had been transferred for interrogation. However, since then, no further information has been provided about his whereabouts.
But on Thursday January 1st, the Israeli military informed Physicians for Human Rights that they have no record of Dr. Abu Safiyyah’s detention. This response came after PHRI, acting on behalf of Dr. Abu Safiyyah’s family requested information to facilitate a lawyer’s visit on January 2.
In its response to PHRI’s inquiry, the military stated:
"Following your inquiry, we would like to inform you that a review has found no indication of the arrest or detention of the individual in question."
In light of this denial, PHRI has now filed a petition with the Israeli High Court of Justice (HCJ) on Thursday, demanding immediate disclosure of Dr. Abu Safiyyah’s location.
Since October 2023, Israel has detained hundreds of Palestinian healthcare workers from Gaza without charge or trial. Health workers have been subjected to torture and other ill-treatment and been held in incommunicado detention.

@amnesty believes in people power and so does the photojournalist @motaz_azaiza from Gaza.
He has saved and changed lives through his pictures - but he cannot stop the genocide alone.
Put pressure on your politicians to #EndGazaGenocide
