Traditionally, lobola was never meant to be a commercial transaction or a “purchase” of a woman. In many African cultures, including our Zimbabwe culture, it symbolizes unity between families, appreciation, commitment, and respect. So personally i think the idea of a “full refund” can feel morally uncomfortable to many people because it reduces marriage to something transactional.

As a nation, it is worrying that we are now considering boreholes in the city as progress when our aim should be to pipe treated water into every home from Kunzvi and other dams that our government is investing in building. The celebration of boreholes in the city is the celebration of the ruralification of our cities. We need people who promote Zimbabwe to also be able to speak truth to power by saying that lowering our city standards to using borehole water is admitting defeat. Lastly, the continuous use of underground water leads to the depletion of aquifers that cannot recharge at the rate of borehole extraction. This in future will create a very dire crisis for us. Our government needs to begin investing in replacing pipes and installing new pipes in our cities to pipe water into every home in Zimbabwe.
