This population structure analysis using microsatellites revealed that fall armyworm are likely to be moving across the continent following prevailing wind patterns, leading to the frequent genetic mixing of populations.

To overcome this, we used highly variable repeat regions of DNA called microsatellites. These showed greater levels of genetic diversity present in invasive fall armyworm, and population structure analysis showed fall armyworm grouped into three distinct genetic clusters.
