So it was a pleasure to review @kazushi_minami's excellent new book in the context of several others on people-to-people ties (including by @PeteMillwood, @lizingleson, @YunxiangGao, and Hongshan Li). This new wave of scholarship helps us properly historicize US-China exchanges

But I fear that precisely because such exchanges were transformative for so many of us, many people who work on US-China relations too readily embrace the idea that "people's diplomacy" stands apart from elite politics and soothe the tensions inflamed by the two governments.

The epitaph from Chiang Kai-shek, engraved in both Chinese and Uyghur, got me interested in how Yolbars fits into both the history of Xinjiang in the twentieth century and Taiwan after 1949.

I first learned about Yolbars when I hiked into the hills behind my apartment in Taipei and stumbled onto his mausoleum (in the shadow of the much grander and better maintained tomb of Bai Chongxi).
