The concept of "causality" has been philosophized about since at least the ancient greeks. Why did it take until the 20th century (or so) for it to be formalized and studied mathematically?

This might be useful knowledge for others too. It's only recently that I discovered this alternative to PAC body of work.

There is a large body of work spanning from the late 1960s to the 1980s that attempted to define what "learning" means. Researchers like Dana Angluin and E. Mark Gold developed membership learning and the inductive inference framework, in which, to my knowledge, they did not assume a distribution over the data. However, the PAC framework eventually dominated the field. Of course, these frameworks have their own drawbacks...
