5/ Megiddo (biblical Armageddon) later became symbolic as a place of decisive clashes. This Bronze Age battle reminds us how ancient superpowers projected power, used intelligence, and turned bold risks into empire-building victories. One of the most consequential battles of antiquity — and among the earliest we can reconstruct with real detail.

4/ This is the first battle in history with a relatively detailed surviving record — inscribed on the walls of the Temple of Amun at Karnak. It shows sophisticated tactics: rapid marches, bold strategy, and combined arms (infantry + chariots). Thutmose III went on to launch 17 campaigns, expanding Egypt into a true empire stretching from Nubia to Syria.

In Mid-to-Late April) c. 1457 BC the Battle of Megiddo took place. One of the oldest battles in recorded history with detailed accounts took place in April nearly 3,460 years ago. Pharaoh Thutmose III led Egypt to a stunning victory at Megiddo against a massive Canaanite coalition.

5/ This Spartan victory marked the peak of Sparta’s hegemony in Greece… but it was short-lived. Overextension, resentment from allies, and defeat at Leuctra (371 BC) soon followed. The “404 Spartans” (in the sense of Spartan triumph in 404 BC) reshaped the Greek world.

April 25, 404 BC, Athens surrendered to Sparta, ending the devastating Peloponnesian War (431–404 BC) after 27 years of conflict. The Spartan-led Peloponnesian League had finally broken Athenian naval power and empire.

4/ The legend’s impact was enormous: It shaped Greek identity, inspired centuries of art and literature, and gave Rome (via Aeneas) a mythic origin story. The Trojan Horse became the ultimate symbol of deception and hubris — “Beware of Greeks bearing gifts.”

3/ While the Trojan War blends myth and possible historical memory (likely inspired by real Bronze Age conflicts around 1200 BC), the date April 24, 1184 BC was the one ancient scholars settled on for the fall of Troy. Archaeology at Hisarlik (modern Turkey) shows multiple layers of destruction — with Troy VIIa often linked to the Homeric war.

On April 23 in 303, Roman soldier George of Lydda publicly tore up Emperor Diocletian’s anti-Christian edict, refused pagan sacrifice, and was tortured then beheaded for his faith. His courage exploded into medieval legend: St. George slaying a dragon to save a princess — the ultimate symbol of good triumphing over evil. Patron saint of knights, England, soldiers & crusaders. His red-cross banner flew across Europe! #OnThisDay #AncientRome #MedievalHistory #SaintGeorge #Chivalry

On April 22 in 960, a two-year-old prince is crowned co-emperor of the Byzantine Empire. Little Basil II would grow up to become Basil the Bulgar-Slayer — one of the most fearsome warrior-emperors in history. Over 49 years he crushed the Bulgarian Empire, blinded 15,000 prisoners, restored the Danube frontier, and pushed Byzantine power to its medieval peak. Ruthless in battle, brilliant in rule. The empire’s golden age started with a toddler in purple. #OnThisDay #MedievalHistory #ByzantineEmpire #BulgarSlayer #AncientRome
