I’d like to think I know a thing or two about war memorials, but in Valletta this week, I visited what I think may be one of the most powerful I’ve seen. 1/

@Taff_Gillingham One of the mostly genuinely friendly people I’ve ever met, and perpetually in good humour. He’ll be missed hugely.

I am very sorry to say that Chumrade Derek Pheasant finally lost his battle with cancer on Friday 10th October. Derek was a great friend and had a wonderful collection, based around the remarkable stories of the recipients. His particular passions were Gallipoli and The Somme. Derek’s mantra was that, “Everything has its rightful home” and he was always happy to pass items on if he thought they belonged in someone else’s collection more than they did in his own. He was researching ‘his fellas’ right up until the end. Derek was a regular visitor to the battlefields, on early Holts Tours with his Dad, with his Suffolk WFA pals and lately with his family. His enthusiasm was infectious and he jumped at the chance to join the ‘T’Others’ of the 13th East Yorks (4th Hull Pals), working as the support platoon for the BBC series, ‘The Trench’ in 2001, living and working in the recreated trenches. He took on the role of stretcher bearer and remained ‘The Old Stretcher Bearer’ to his Chums and Chumrades ever after. Please do spare a thought for Derek’s family. Cheerio OSB. x

Here is ‘my’ DH9 looking fabulous in the Duxford sunshine. Can’t quite register that it was 25 years ago that I hauled this aircraft, and the IWM static example, out of a Rajasthan elephant stable.

We held a wonderfully uplifting service this afternoon in our Recreation Hut to celebrate the life of Dora Ringland. Dora has been a supporter of GWH ever since her first visit. It was lovely to be part of the celebration of her life among her family & friends. Thank you, Dora x

This weekend we launched our exhibition for #HeritageOpenDays! This year’s HODs theme is #RoutesNetworksConnections, so our Guard House exhibition explores the routes in which men and women joined the Armed Forces on the outbreak of war 110 years ago in 1914. 🧵 1/

It's the 110th anniversary of the Battle of Mons tomorrow. As with all history, separating the facts from the mythology, and understanding the difference, is something that should be done if we claim to 'remember' those who were there - combattants and civilians alike.

It’s the time of year again when our JS and their staff visit Normandy on Exercise LION’S SPIRIT to learn about the realities of war. This spring has been one of our biggest, with Waterloo Company (all 336 of them!) there now. 🧵 1/5 👇🏼
