Permanent Daylight Saving Time is population-wide drowsy driving in darkness for months on end. Restore permanent Standard Time for sleep and safety instead!

It’s imperative that we revert to STANDARD, not Daylight time, for two reasons, one of which you may have never considered. You know the first: solar noon is closest to 12 o’clock all year. That means an equal number of hours before and after noon each day. This also means earlier sunrises which are significantly better for establishing a healthy circadian rhythm. The second reason is that nearly ONE THIRD of US counties are in the wrong timezone. A significant swath of the country isn’t only an artificial hour ahead because of daylight time… but TWO HOURS ahead of true solar time. Year-round daylight time, especially without recalibrating time zones, would establish this error permanently, affecting millions of Americans. We should be letting the Sun dictate the day the way God made it. Arbitrary, artificial tampering would be worse for us all. Fix the time zones and affix standard time.

On this Memorial Day, my thoughts are drawn towards memories of my dad, Clarence Owens, who served in an all-black segregated unit, the 24th Infantry Regiment, in the Philippines. He was typical of the tenacious, hard-working, and patriotic Black American men of that post-war era. He fought past the limitations of the segregated Jim Crow South, graduating in 1952 from Ohio State University with a PHD in agronomy. For the next 40 years, as a professor and research scientist at Florida A&M, he traveled the world, including two years in Liberia, Africa, when I was 5 years old. In his later years, he was a very successful entrepreneur and farmer, as he planted within me his passion for “at-risk” children. My father was my first hero and mentor. I’ll be forever grateful to him, and the countless others who have put on the uniform and dedicated their entire lives to building "a more perfect union." This Memorial Day, let us remember the millions who served and paid the ultimate sacrifice for that same vision.

Please help me honor Raban Anthony Kimungu. He was one of my closest brothers and one of the best human beings to ever grace this planet. His aura and compassion were contagious. He was shot in the head by the Fallujah sniper in 2005. He survived and chose to come back from Germany to Fallujah to finish his deployment. But he died a few months later. His loss robbed the planet of a truly amazing human being.
