One of my laws of academic administration: The most microscopic concerns genetate the most discussion. Big strategic issues are largely ignored. I even have an evolutionary explanation for it.

This is exactly what I was writing about last week. In the face of AI, we need to re-emphasize the value of human learning. AI can do stuff for us, but we're here to learn together. science.org/content/articl…

@acerbialberto We should recognize that we're not a paper publishing engine or a student ranking machine. We're an academic community, and we better start behaving like it. Between this and the news on the Einstein companion, I've been writing a blog post about this. cnet.com/tech/services-…

I asked Claude Code to read a preprint of mine (osf.io/preprints/soca…), to develop some individual-based models (in R) exploring some dynamics that could result from the theoretical framework developed in the preprint and, finally, to write a paper. (I gave some further... -->

@JasonColavito In my experience, most students want to do their own work, and they want to learn, if we give them a chance. If we design a learning environment in which using tools like this is the logical thing to do, it's largely on us.

I guess this is the end of higher education. There are now AI bots that plug into Canvas to do all of the course work for students and others to then grade it all for professors without either student or professor entering the course.

The University of Calgary is closing its Classics Department in July. Meanwhile, Calgary Classical Academy has hundreds of K-12 students enrolled in Latin, paleography, and (soon) Ancient Greek. arts.ucalgary.ca/about/about-fa…

And the @Nature essay is probably the only thing I’ve published yet that I think even non-academics will enjoy. Here is a gift link to the full PDF if needed (though it lacks some of the cool audio/visuals of the link above) 🔓: rdcu.be/e5gLE

RE: The Sam Altman stuff. In the end, what really matters is the experience of being here, and contributing, in what way we can, to making the experience of others better.

@jens2go That's happened to me once. Very liminal experience. Fortunately, the display was built so that my shovel mark was on the back of the stone tool and invisible to the public. But I knew.

One of the more bizarre experiences as an archaeologist is to meet old finds you once dug up in long and hot days at the excavation behind glass in an air-conditioned museum exhibition. All of a sudden, they'd become something special, sacred things almost: an exhibit.
