Rich Sutton gives an eerily John The Baptist-like address on AI @ualberta I have much to say about this. Perhaps at some point I will.

Here is my write up from last week:

This is exactly what I was writing about last week. In the face of AI, we need to re-emphasize the value of human learning. AI can do stuff for us, but we're here to learn together.

@JasonColavito To be fair to LLMs, how many humans would tell you the same thing?

This the same AI that just told me that the Great Pyramid has a spinning emerald capstone on an iron axis that runs through the whole pyramid?

Sam Altman says artificial intelligence may be discovered rather than invented. Deep learning may be closer to discovering a property of nature than inventing a new technology. Which suggests intelligence itself may follow a fundamental scientific principle we are only beginning to understand.

@acerbialberto We should recognize that we're not a paper publishing engine or a student ranking machine. We're an academic community, and we better start behaving like it. Between this and the news on the Einstein companion, I've been writing a blog post about this.

My book is now published! 🌏🎶🧪
You can download it for free at academic.oup.com/book/62353 - I’d be grateful if you do!
I also published an accessible summary with audio/video today in @Nature: nature.com/articles/d4158…
Try that first, then give the whole book a read if you like it!

@PatrickESavage @Nature Great stuff. Just in time for our discussion of human exceptionalism and the nature of culture in Anthro 101.
English

And the @Nature essay is probably the only thing I’ve published yet that I think even non-academics will enjoy. Here is a gift link to the full PDF if needed (though it lacks some of the cool audio/visuals of the link above) 🔓: rdcu.be/e5gLE
