Yes students need rules, but even more so they need routines, boundaries, high expectations, and responsibilities. The first doesn't require relationships just enforcement, but the rest depend on a strong relationship to be effective.

THREAD: The teacher shortage is alarming. 3 big focus areas seem to require rethinking: 1. Teacher recruitment/pay 2. School schedules 3. Instructional models I don’t know much about #1 or #2, just thankful for those trying to figure it out. But I have some thoughts on #3. 1/6

For that to happen, students need to have unlimited access to content through a digital home base. That ensures they can work at their own pace and are less reliant on adults. Teachers can then focus on being facilitators of learning through small-group and 1-1 discussions. 6/6

Teaching is situational. Research can describe tendencies in larger populations--but it cannot dictate what to do in the moment. That takes judgment.

In lieu of an “icebreaker” to launch the new school year..think about having each grade or team in your building have time to share, put their accomplishments together, share them with colleagues, students, parents and the community. Would celebrate teacher voice !

One way to build positive relationships with your students is to treat every kid like they’re one of your most favorite people. Make them feel special, because they are.
