Between 2011 and 2015, DCI officers would arrest me and ask, “Nyakundi, what is this thing called blogging? We were attacked from every side, including by mainstream media, which dismissed us as unsubstantiated, unverified and unscrupulous online personalities. Yet the same space they mocked became one of the most powerful channels for public complaints, whistleblowing, accountability and stories that would never have seen daylight elsewhere. Blogging survived because Kenyans needed somewhere to speak. It survived because many truths first arrive untidy, through ordinary people, victims, insiders and citizens who have no newsroom, no editor and no platform. The industry was not perfect, but it opened a door that power badly wanted shut.
