Thank you, Westmoreland. 🙏🏽 Last night’s MSME Dialogue was powerful because you made it powerful. You didn’t come to hear speeches. You came to tell us exactly where the system is failing small businesses, from access to affordable loans, to the red tape blocking exports, to the energy costs eating your profits. Myself, Anthony Hylton, Peter Bunting, Julian Robinson, Senators Kisha Anderson and Ramon Small-Ferguson as well as all 3 Westmoreland MP’s Dr Dayton Campbell, Ian Hayles and Dwayne Vaz came to listen. And we heard you. I don’t believe in townhalls for show. I believe in townhalls for action. My team and I left Hotel Commingle with clear marching orders from the people who are actually building this economy. To every MSME owner who took time from your business to be there: I respect your hustle, and I take your trust seriously. To the Westmoreland Chamber of Commerce, thank you for your partnership. We will be back with solutions. Count on it. #Westmoreland #MSMEDialogue #BuildingBusiness #PNP

Like many commentators and opinion-makers, I have been thinking about what we must do to take Jamaica out of its chronic economic underperformance. With a GDP of approximately US$7,000 per person, one of the lowest in the Caribbean, compared with US$19,000 in Trinidad & Tobago and US$26,000 in Barbados. Jamaica’s average real GDP growth has been merely crawled at around 0.8% (not even 1%) over the past 10 years. Jamaica’s economy is clearly not delivering for our people.

Gone are the days of quasi-authoritarian governance that held sway when the opposition only had 14 seats. The PNP is a stronger, more powerful opposition than ever. @MarkJGolding #BudgetDebate2026

Draining the NHT $11.4 billion transfer OUT of the NHT to the government’s coffers again. The NHT was created for housing, not to plug fiscal accounts.@MarkJGolding #BudgetDebate2026

I've noticed PNP supporters commenting that @annmarievazja took a family member abroad to give birth because she knew Jamaica's healthcare system was inadequate. Can you explain the reasoning behind this claim? The elections are now over and it's time to move on.

Today I wanted to weigh in on the proposed Special Consumption Tax (SCT) on sweetened beverages, pushing back against claims that it’s a public health measure. “Let’s be honest about what this tax is really about.” While sugar consumption and chronic illness are real concerns, the structure of this tax tells a different story: ➡️ The tax is based on container size, not sugar content ➡️ It does not encourage manufacturers to reduce sugar ➡️ Government expects to collect $10.1B, signalling prices will rise but consumption may not fall ➡️ The burden will fall heaviest on lower-income Jamaicans At a time when many are already struggling, especially in the wake of Hurricane Melissa, policies must ease pressure, not deepen it. This isn’t about health. It’s about revenue. Stop trying to “sugar coat” this tax measure. Jamaicans deserve honesty, transparency and fairness.
