@AlephBlog David -- Some of the children may do worse, but about half of these women are cohabiting with the other parent -- so there is a second parent around. Nice to hear from you!

@AndrewCherlin Hi professor, I was a student of yours back in 1980 (Urban Sociology). I really enjoyed the class. What I wonder about is whether the children do worse on average from not having two parents, or if having two parents that aren't married has any impact on the children.

College-educated women are much more likely to have a first child outside of marriage than in the past. See my article in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. pnas.org/content/118/37…
