Tomorrow, UKIP are set to march in Liverpool. There is no place in our city for their scapegoating. Love is greater than hate. Unity is stronger than division and racism. Hope is more powerful than fear. We are Liverpool – a city of hope, not hate. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

I genuinely cannot believe we’re still having this same conversation. Attainment v Achievement. I remember over 30 years ago having the exact same discussion in a staff meeting when Ofsted first landed.
Cerys Turner@cerysturner7

I analysed almost 500 inspections to see if schools with disadvantaged intakes are performing worse on pupil outcomes. The findings show that it's disproportionate. Heads say it's demoralising as they urge Ofsted not to confuse achievement & attainment. tes.com/magazine/news/…

I think we knew that! Nothing has changed. It’s been like that for years & years. Context does not matter (so they tell us).. As a retired head (17 yrs in post) of a very disadvantaged secondary school I was told poverty is not an excuse! It’s not but context is important!
Tes magazine@tes

Exclusive: Schools with the highest proportion of disadvantaged pupils are more likely to be marked down by Ofsted in the achievement category, Tes can reveal tes.com/magazine/news/…

The book is packed with insights from serving school leaders on how to fix the system. A year on from publication, and if anything, it’s got worse. amzn.eu/d/04CXdZ05

I’m sure you’ve read this powerful piece by now (unless you work for Ofsted). Edmund contributed to our @Headrest_UK book called ‘Beyond Belief: Why school accountability is broken and how to fix it.’ @Ofstednews presumably never read that either. Beyond Belief, and then some.
Edmund Barnett-Ward@Edmund_B_W

I’ve been away for a bit. We haven’t been having the best time, to be honest. I’ve noticed a few things happening with Ofsted and their supporters recently, and I’ve written about it. Ofsted, of course, are driving on regardless. difficultlessons.wordpress.com/2026/03/17/dri…

Intentional vexatious complaints take up a lot of school time and resources and increase workload and stress for staff and volunteer governors. They cost money too. Enough is enough. Read our latest blog below. 4/4 headrestuk.co.uk/blog/when-comp…

They say if you want to see the finest Neoclassical building in the world, you don’t go to Athens or Rome - you head straight to Lime Street. St George’s Hall isn’t just a Liverpool landmark; it’s a global icon that has left some of history’s greatest figures speechless. From the breathtaking Minton Tile floor to the acoustics of the Concert Room, its beauty is truly world-class. Charles Dickens called it "The most perfect hall in the world." ✍️ Queen Victoria described it as "Worthy of ancient Athens." 👑 Sir Nikolaus Pevsner labelled it one of the "finest neo-Grecian buildings in the world." 📐

🧵In our latest blog we respond to headteachers’ concerns about how easy it is to weaponise the complaints process through the use of vexatious AI-generated letters to intimidate staff and leaders. These are sometimes shared on social media attacking individuals. 1/4

There needs to be clear consequences, possibly financial, at a national level, for malicious, unfounded, vexatious or false allegations. The unions need to take this up. The stress this causes and the time it takes is beyond description. Enough. @NAHTnews @ASCL_UK
Headrest@Headrest_UK

The negative impact on school leaders who receive vexatious AI-driven letters of complaint now seems to be getting out of hand. It’s dominating many of our calls. We seem to be at the tipping point. What advice can we give to colleagues? How can we move forward? Thoughts? ⤵️

Labour MPs just voted to expand free school meals to half a million more children, lifting 100,000 children out of poverty. The Tories and Reform UK voted against. Only Labour will give children growing up in our country the best start in life.

Teenage me had a slightly inappropriate crush on Rula Lenska from the rather risqué 70s TV show ‘Rock Follies’ Fast forward 50 years: tonight in Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka, I found myself chatting with her on WhatsApp Teenage me would be stunned Life has a strange sense of humour!🤣

We have been made aware of a distressing image doing the rounds today, suggesting Tottenham have beaten us 3-1. This has clearly been photoshopped, and we will be taking this up with the relevant authorities. Even we'd beat Spurs...

@dan_ofsted I appreciate that. I’m very pleased to see inspection teams consisting of a range of experiences, including senior leaders. But when it’s an HMI making such high-stakes decisions (that as you know could end up with judicial review etc.), it must be an experienced head doing it.

I think it’s more nuanced than that. Plenty of systems leaders in MATs and LAs who have not been HTs, and this could include that. The understanding of how schools and wider systems work at a technical and strategic level is essential. And proof of making a difference too. Job title alone probably doesn’t cover this. And there are more grey areas here than ever. Hence there are various rounds to the assessment to help us test the knowledge, skills and behaviours of candidates.

I see Ofsted are recruiting HMIs. In order to apply you need - a proven track record of leading schools I’ve been inspected by, and inspected with, a number of HMIs who have never led a school (HT), let alone several. And as for ‘proven’. By whom? HMI? How will this work?

@dan_ofsted @Janroweljmu @Headrest_UK Thanks Dan, that’s appreciated. But what we do know through our work @Headrest_UK is that we only retain ‘credibility’ (I hope😉) because we have done the job. We’ve sat in their chair. It would be really great if Ofsted could be the same.

I want to be really clear about the uniqueness of the headteacher role. It is a lonely and difficult job at times. It certainly gives a unique understanding of the totality of a school’s work and operations. We certainly benefit from having inspectors who are either former or serving headteachers. And to my shame, I’ve never said it to you directly, I have huge admiration for the work you do to support headteachers.

@dan_ofsted That’s a bit more encouraging. But this still allows scope to have those that write the reports having never led a school or multi-school organisation. Basically then, if you are deputy or work in an LA, then don’t bother applying. Surely, they’ll never make the shortlist?
