@NateSilver538 Elon Musk isn't "right-leaning." A lot of people are moderately fiscally conservative and moderately socially liberal. Democrats are just plain nuts, which is why they gaslight everyone into believing everyone who disagrees with them are on the right.

1. A lot of conservative discourse on this topic is concentrated on telling people to get over their anxieties about marrying early and just accept a few years of being poor (or relatively poor) while young and building a life together. I am not necessarily opposed to that...

@Walker00101 @resisres It’s mutual benefit. They get higher wages and we get cheaper goods. Same as car companies fleeing northern Union states for southern right to work states. Additionally we buy lots of produce from Mexico because they can grow things like strawberries in the winter.

People are not seething because you earned a PhD. They are seething because, after all the self congratulation and the glitter emojis, they discovered the grand achievement you are flaunting is… about ants. Most people can accept someone celebrating medical research, engineering breakthroughs, or something that clearly improves the world. But when they see someone behaving as though they have unlocked the secrets of the universe only for the punchline to be “I studied ant chores”, it lands very differently. It feels less like academic excellence and more like elite insulation. Ordinary people are drowning under rent, tax, debt, and collapsing public services, and then they watch an Oxford biologist triumphantly posting about insect labour division while describing their “beautiful office”. The resentment has nothing to do with education. It is the tone deafness of boasting about a life of academic comfort while researching a topic that most people instinctively place somewhere between trivia and hobby. The fury is not directed at your success. It is directed at the mismatch between the scale of the celebration and the subject matter. In short: people are annoyed because it is about ants.

Why? Because someone who is a natural-born citizen of another country is shaped by a different set of values. This often leads to sympathetic ties to their home country and to immigrant communities that reside here. @Timodc I believe the law gives them these powers within 100 miles of the border and ports of entry so they can use the loophole that any international airport is a port of entry. It’s a deeply craven way to look at the legislation.

What is the legal rationale for CBP to be in Charlotte? My understanding is the INA grants CBP authority to conduct warrantless searches a “reasonable distance” from border, generally defined as 100 miles. Charlotte is here.

@seandsweeney I feel like sadly a lot of men who are “parents” but spend little actual time with their kids would also hold this view. But no one who’s been the primary parent hasn’t had a punt day here or there. I know for us planes are a no screen time limits space.
