After years of building AI models to decode the language of cells, I’m thrilled to announce my next chapter: I will join Xaira Therapeutics as SVP and Head of Biomedical AI. Xaira’s vision is bold—and deeply aligned with my own: to build a virtual cell powered by AI, capable of unraveling the molecular basis of disease and matching the right therapy to the right patient. This is more than just drug discovery—it’s an opportunity to fundamentally rethink how we understand and treat human disease, from first principles to real-world cures. With a $1B+ war chest, an all-star team, and the long view in mind, we’re setting out to do something transformative: create foundation models that can reason over biology and bring precision and speed to every step of therapeutic development. At the same time, I’ll be maintaining my academic affiliations at University of Toronto, UHN, and Vector Institute during the next year to ensure a smooth transition—for my students, collaborators, and the many ongoing projects I deeply care about. Grateful to my mentors, collaborators, students for getting me here. The best is yet to come. Let’s build the future of medicine. #AI #DrugDiscovery #FoundationModels #VirtualCell #Xaira #scGPT #Biomedicine

Saturday night, Dr. Shaf Keshavjee and The Toronto Lung Transplant Program celebrated the 1000th Ex-Vivo lung perfusion at TGH. “UHN- The Future of Transplant”, a documentary that I had the privilege to direct and co-produce with UHN’s Christian Cote also debuted. Honoured.

Pre-processing clinical data is one of the most arduous tasks in machine learning. Congrats to Maxwell on developing a pipeline that streamlines ex vivo data processing from hours to minutes! @UofT_TCAIREM @UofTIMS

The Toronto Lung Transplant Program has just completed 213 lung transplants in 2023. We broke our own world record for number of transplants in a single year (212 in 2019). I’m sure 2024 will be another great year! @UHN @UHNTransplant @UHN_Surgery @TrilliumGift @ISHLT @AATSHQ
