I initially read this as "First AI-generated pro vice-chancellor" Prompt: "Australian university executive, friendly beard, blazer, no tie, tasteful brick wall background."

I don't often wear political t-shirts, but I'm proudly sporting this one today. I'm an immigrant. I teach American (and international!) college students, research the U.S. economy, consult with policymakers, write books, raise my kids, pay taxes, and try to make this a better place.

My take on the latest @RBAInfo interest rate decision--and their explanation of it--in @FinancialReview. Spoiler alert: "Bullock pointed to “a range of factors” driving the decision. But there are really just two rooted causes. The board didn’t raise rates nearly enough, and Jim Chalmers has been spending too much. They’ve both messed up. Big time. Why is it so hard for Bullock to say so?" afr.com/policy/economy…

For things like this, it is rather easy to determine who has been cheating the whole time. And they're caught out regardless. But the point of the education system should not be to facilitate cheating/laziness before punishing at the end. Build a system that facilitates virtue.

Tonight I'm giving a final exam in person to a class that has been online the whole time. It'll be a good test of who has been using ChatGPT until now First look: half the class doesn't know which curve is the demand and which one is the supply. So... yeah

Excited to share a draft 2025 Asia-Pacific IO Conference program. A bunch of great contributed and invited sessions. The keynotes on "Procrastination Markets" by hashtag#PaulHeidhues and "Serial Acquisitions in Tech" by Ginger Jin should be fascinating. apios.org.au/wp-content/upl…

@profjonny Australian purchases used to account for 100% of my unpaid credit card bill. Now are 100%. But I weep for you and your portfolio.

@JustinWolfers Two *coherent* positions on AI. My favourite non-coherent one is that AI is totally useless, yet is going to replace us all.

There are basically only two positions in the debate about AI. 1. I’ve barely invested any time in learning how to use it effectively. AI sucks. 2. I’ve invested in learning how to use this tool. Holy cow, it’s transformational. Position #1 has lower barriers to entry.
