‘It’s not our responsibility...
We're NOT paying for your college.’
While we did support all three in many ways, including financially...
We wanted our 3 boys to approach life, college and beyond, with an empowering mentality:
→ Being resourceful
→ Identify their calling
→ Take ownership of their journey
I wanted them to leverage the journey, learn to lead their families according to their values, and be equipped for life.
We underestimate what our kids are capable of, especially when they have skin in the game.
As parents we often step in to ‘help’ or ‘save’ them.
We forget that “necessity is the mother of invention.”
Given the chance...
... they use intellectual capability and curiosity to win
... to experience self-reliance
... build confidence and courage
... experience the reward of earning their own way.
So what if they come up a little short financially?
You place them in a situation where they're grateful, have skin in the game, and are excited!!!
Actively involved and hero of their journey.
So... did it work?
Oldest graduated with undergrad, grad school in 5 years debt free, and getting married in couple weeks
Middle just finished his junior year, 3 National Championships running and on track to graduate in 4
Youngest finished soph year, has 3 exceptional $100K career opptys
Total investment ALL IN for college? ~ $40,000
How are you handling the college conversation with your kids?
