@SwiftOnSecurity we had a French drain installed in a basement recently after some flooding; the contractor left this incredible pamphlet that seems designed to convince people in central PA that it isn't some effete European thing

@theJoshMeister safari gets patched separately for older OSes for whatever reason support.apple.com/en-us/HT214089
English

@0xDEADBEEFCAFE @arstechnica it might show up on the PCIe bus but that doesn't mean the OS is going to be able to do anything with it (no Arm Radeon drivers, for starters). Apple has been fairly clear about lack of support: macrumors.com/2023/06/11/app…
English

@AndrewWrites @arstechnica But shouldn’t a video card just look like another thing attached to the PCIe bus? “Vídeo I/O” could imply capture and playback, but the relevance of video playback has gone the way of the dinosaur.

M2 Ultra Mac Studio review: Who needs a Mac Pro, anyway? arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/0… by @AndrewWrites
English

@0xDEADBEEFCAFE @arstechnica at all. and not an oversight, just the way the chips are designed. NVMe storage should be fine. Apple gives "audio and video I/O, networking, and storage cards" as examples. ("video I/O" implies things like capture cards to me, not GPUs)

English

@AndrewWrites @arstechnica At all or with limited performance? Can it at least do NVMe storage over PCIe?
This looks like a major oversight. What's supposed to go in those PCIe slots?
English

@0xDEADBEEFCAFE @arstechnica new mac pro can't do extra gpus
English

@arstechnica @AndrewWrites It all depends on how much NVMe storage you need, or how many extra GPUs.
English

@Just_Reboot yeah it's weird, who knows who gave it to him though. it's just the first twitter alternative that the non-techy people in my orbit seem meaningfully interested in.
English

@SigniusNetworks @arstechnica when every single PC company is also down by 25 to 30%, it's bigger than any one company's product decisions. Mac growth was also UP double digits six months ago, and nothing about their pricing has changed since then.
English
@arstechnica @AndrewWrites So its Covid's fault??
Nothing to do with the astronomical prices of the new Macs or the fact you cant upgrade the RAM or the abysmal spec of 24" iMac with 256MB SSD with 8GB of RAM for £1800 or £2600 with just 16GB of RAM & 2TB SSD.
as for the Mac Studio prices WTAF

Consider all the negative public figures in power right now who started with decades-long impunity on white-collar crime.

@belindasmilne @arstechnica no, not what “disabled” means in this context
English

@arstechnica @AndrewWrites So… they took money for a service to allow people with disabilities to access a service that was otherwise free?
Basically, they exploited disabled people to make money but Elon, in his usual ham-fisted way, pulled the rug out, so now they want their “customers” to pay for it?
