Does anyone have contact with the @JohnLewisRetail leadership team? If so, please put me in touch. it is proving bizarrely difficult to spend money with the company. And the customer service that I’ve experienced in trying to resolve this has been absolutely hopeless.

@POLITICOEurope It is not correct to suggest that you need to undermine encryption in order to block the sharing of child sexual abuse material over end-to-end encrypted messaging services. Client side scanning allows this to be done in a privacy preserving manner.

@Ronxyz00 Anyone who believes “foreign countries” will pay the tariffs does not understand the concept of tariffs. The Trump Tariffs will be paid by uS consumers!

@MarcoFoster_ What is the point of a free trade agreement when you suddenly introduce tariffs?

JUST NOW: Senator Mark Warner GOES OFF on Jamieson Greer asking why we would tariff Australia: “Answer the question on Australia! We have a trade surplus with Australia! We have a free trade agreement! They are an incredibly important national security partner. Why were they whacked with a tariff?””

@BillAckman Don’t forget that the 10% tariff for the privilege of selling in the US is really a tax on US consumers. It will have an inflationary impact.

How’s this for a simple approach? We keep 10% across the board tariffs for the special privilege of doing business with the U.S. to compensate us for the investments we have made in global defense, health and otherwise, and to compensate our country for historically unfair trade practices that have contributed to our massive deficits and national debt. We keep the pressure on China to resolve materially unfair trading practices, IP theft, currency manipulation, and other practices that have disadvantaged our nation. We pause reciprocal tariff implementation for 90 days so we have time to engage in private negotiations with other countries, focusing first on those whose tariffs and practices have materially interfered with the competitiveness of U.S. manufactured goods in their markets. Lastly, we consider that: (1) it does not make sense to have balanced trade with countries that are smaller than us and that have fewer resources to spend on US goods, i.e., we will forever be buying more from Madagascar than they will buy from us, (2) attempting to bring back jobs in low-wage manufacturing is not good for America, acknowledging, for example, that Bangladesh and Vietnam are better places to produce textiles and athletic shoes than here, (3) U.S. ‘exports’ of software, IP, finance, and other services are high value and important sources of trade that are not reflected in traditional measures of exports and imports, and if included in the calculations would make the balance of trade statistics look much more balanced, (4) our multinationals’ subsidiaries that sell services in foreign countries that are not counted in the balance of trade calculation, but generate profits, value and future dividends are good for America, (5) a goal of generating a dollar of exports for every dollar of imports is not a useful one, particularly on a country-by-country basis in light of our massively higher standard of living, and having the largest economy in the world. Lastly, the current trading system, while far from perfect or fair to the U.S., has served us extremely well so we need to be prudent in how we change it so as not to upset the world order in such a manner that it disadvantages our country over the long term.

@BillAckman @realDonaldTrump The numbers on the Trump tariff tables relate to the balance of trade and have nothing to do with tariffs. So don’t expect too many announcements of the imaginary tariffs levied by others being withdrawn. To improve the balance of trade, make goods that other people want!

One would have to imagine that President @realDonaldTrump’s phone has been ringing off the hook. The practical reality is that there is insufficient time for him to make deals before the tariffs are scheduled to take effect. I would therefore not be surprised to wake up Monday with an announcement from the President that he was postponing the implementation of the tariffs to give him time to make deals. President Trump has gotten the world’s and our trading partners’ attention and elevated the importance of resolving an unfair tariff regime that has harmed American workers and decimated our industrial base over many decades. This is a critically important issue that needs to be resolved, and we finally have a president committed to getting this done. The problem, however, can’t be resolved in days, so why wouldn’t a pause make sense to give the president time to properly resolve this critical issue and to allow companies large and small the time to prepare for changes in their supply chains? The risk of not doing so is that the massive increase in uncertainty drives the economy into a recession, potentially a severe one. One thing is for sure. Monday will be one of the more interesting days in our country’s economic history.

@IainDale @eamonnpquigley You wilfully induced a lot of “friction” into that market access, in the form of both tariffs and other barriers. Despite it being our largest export market by far - 44% if I remember correctly. The US is much less important to us and will decline further with these new tariffs.

Just seen Sir Ed Davey on the BBC News arguing for us to rejoin the Customs Union. This is crackers on various levels, not least that he is effectively arguing that we should voluntarily agree to 20 per cent tariffs from the US rather than 10 per cent. Economics of the madhouse.

BREAKING: Republican Congressman Thomas Massie just introduced the Federal Reserve Board Abolition Act, a bill aimed at abolishing the Federal Reserve. It's almost as if Republicans want a total economic collapse in America. Do people understand the potential consequences? Eliminating the Fed would highly destabilize the US economy, likely result in the U.S. dollar no longer being the world’s reserve currency, increase the likelihood of hyperinflation, bank runs, and severe market turmoil.

Hard to overstate quite how badly this kind of comment goes down with US allies in Europe – whose own troops fought and died in America’s wars, not least those that followed the USA triggering NATO article 5 after 9/11.
Antonello Guerrera@antoguerrera

Bad news for Starmer and Macron. Vance confirms the only US security guarantee in Ukraine will be the mineral deal. He also plays down British & French peacekeeping troops as “20k troops from some random country that hasn’t fought a war in 30 or 40 years”.
