With deep sadness, AASLD recognizes the passing of a great leader in the field. Dr. Stephen Harrison leaves behind an incredible legacy, particularly in NASH/MASH. Thank you Drs. Rinella, Tetri, and Brunt for your moving tribute, which you can read here: aasld.org/col-stephen-ha…

There is no place I’d rather be than the University of Michigan. I believe that public universities are critical centers of scholarship, research, teaching and culture and for social mobility and national competitiveness. And I’d much rather be here than any Ivy League school 〽️

@SantaJOno UM is great as a state university, but no matter the ranking, Princeton is definitely the No. 1 . University for undergraduate studies.

@LauringLab Translational research in particular is becoming increasingly expensive. I see trainees using expensive methods in their mentored research (e.g. RNA-seq), but how to start a new independent lab without significant institutional investment?

@LauringLab So true, Adam. NIH R01 support is declining in real $ and AMCs are not incentivized to support physician-scientists to do research; generally they are more valuable to the institution as clinicians, not researchers.

What can you learn about a patient with #cirrhosis by asking them how many animals they can name in 60 sec? In a representative dataset of older persons, few animals identifies: 1⃣⬇️QOL 2⃣Frailty 3⃣Disability 4⃣⬆️healthcare utilization journals.lww.com/ctg/Fulltext/9… #livertwitter

We're building a Pathogen Biorepository at UMich!! They're looking to hire a tenured/TT director that focuses on disease ecology/evolution, and hopefully uses collections in their research. Please share broadly!

Changing temporal trends in HCV-associated HCC -- decrease in HCV-associated HCC in DAA era as expected but fewer patients with cirrhosis at the time of HCC diagnosis. Retrospective study but reminder that SVR ≠ stop HCC surveillance journals.lww.com/ctg/Fulltext/2… @ACG_CTG

So your patient’s liver surface is nodular. Do they have #cirrhosis? they often don’t! 1️⃣many people with nodularity do NOT have F3/F4 2️⃣true even for people with lots of nodularity This study used MRI and software to 📏nodularity doi.org/10.1007/s00330… #LiverTwitter

How to fix? We are not careful enough about our citations. Often people pick a convenient citation to support a claim without vetting it. Citations are not vetted rigorously enough; but whose job is it? Uncompensated manuscript reviewers?

We tell ourselves that science is self-correcting and the best science will win out, but this is sobering evidence to the contrary. Nonreplicable publications are cited more than replicable ones advances.sciencemag.org/content/7/21/e…

I have something like 2-3 dozen patients who transferred care to me at the VA after losing their insurance. Naturally, they are disappointed to meet me! But I have a surprise for them. We will provide the highest quality care they can receive
