Have you all noticed that Andrew has not thrown here one tweet comparing Kampala to where he is? You think he can’t? Instead, he is busy lifting the flag of this great country Uganda 🇺🇬 from where he is. He can choose to take pictures of clean streets and compare them to Kampala. He has instead chosen to be better than such pettiness! Well Done Andrew. What a great Example your are to kids here.

Kiara Evenets MD, Joweria Nabuuma opened the floor for exhibitors to share their insights and expectations. This level of engagement is exactly what we need to make sure the "Brand DNA" we discuss today becomes "Moments People Feel" on the Baby and Kids 2026 Expo floor.

*Confirmed — President Museveni assented to the _Copyright and Neighbouring Rights (Amendment) Act, 2026_ on April 29, 2026* bed6 official signing: _“I SIGNIFY my assent to the bill”_ with Museveni’s signature, dated 29/4/2026. *What this law changes for Uganda’s creatives* This is the biggest copyright reform since the 2006 Act. Parliament passed it on March 17, 2026 after years of lobbying by musicians, filmmakers, authors. Key provisions: bed6 *1. Better pay for artists — no more “fame without income”* - *Royalty system*: Minister of Justice now sets procedures for collecting/distributing royalties in consultation with URSB - *Equitable remuneration*: If your song/video is used for ads, broadcast, or public performance, you _must_ be paid. Payment goes through systems under the National Payment Systems Act - *Caller ring-back tunes*: 60% to Author/Performer, 31% Telecom, 8.5% Aggregators. Artists earn more from mobile money - *No more one-time payments*: Mandatory payment to performers/producers _each time_ a work is used bed66e1af945 *2. Fixes digital piracy gaps* - *Online enforcement*: Criminalizes digital lock circumvention. ISPs that don’t take down illegal content face up to 5 years jail - *Take-down notices*: Enables removal of infringing content online - *Collecting societies regulated*: All must be registered with URSB cfaff945 *3. Protects creators long-term* - *Reversion rights*: Copyright expires after 20 years, rights go back to original author. Stops lifetime loss of control to labels - *Written contracts required*: Ends verbal agreements — new legal baseline for deals - *Orphan works*: New licensing framework for works with untraceable holders 6e1acfaff945 *4. Expands enforcement* - *High Court jurisdiction*: Cases no longer limited to Commercial Court. Adds quasi-judicial dispute settlement - *Stronger penalties*: Enhanced statutory damages to deter infringement 6e1a2e90 *Why creatives are celebrating* Eddy Kenzo, UNMF President: _“Today the Bill has been passed, and a creator has regained full authority over their creativity. The old law has changed, and it now belongs to the past”_ a62d *Example*: Dr Isabirye explained musicians will now earn forever from old songs played on radio/TV. Even when ill or retired, _“grandchildren can keep earning from this for as long as those songs are played”_ 681c *What happens next* 1. *Gazetting*: Now that it’s assented, it gets gazetted and becomes law 2. *Implementation*: The hard part. CMOs must operationalize 70/30 rules, publish tariffs, enforce contracts 3. *Copyright Management System*: State House already built a system with UCC, URA, Police to track plays and pay artists d728a7cb Speaker Anita Among told artists: _“use the legislation... to enforce its rights”_ — Parliament’s done its part, now industry must act d728 *Bottom line*: Uganda moves from _“fame without income to fame with income”_. But as Monitor notes: _“the law is not the end of the story. It is the beginning of a test”_.
